After the completion of the program, there are a number of career opportunities available within the company. There are currently over 50 designated CAs working in various areas of our organization that used the experience gained with their CA designation to move into roles such as Merchandising and Marketing, Senior Analyst positions, manager & director roles and even vice president positions. All students are encouraged to pursue any of these careers after completing the CA program at Sobeys Inc.

During your CA training at Sobeys, you will have the opportunity to work in other areas of finance typically unavailable through accounting firm programs. Internal Audit will give you insight into the planning, execution and reporting of various audits that relate to potential organization risks, or working as part of an Internal Reporting & Analysis team you will be responsible for identifying, preparing and analyzing reports to be presented to various levels of management. Working with the Budgeting & Planning group of the organization you will assist in organizing, compiling and preparing the budgets and related analysis for the organization. Practical work experience is a key element in becoming a CA.

The CA program is an intense program and that is why Sobeys assigns each of their students a mentor. These mentors are recent CA graduates themselves and are there for support during the ASCA modules and the UFE (Uniform Evaluation) exam. There are also Counseling Members that will ensure that all students are meeting the requirements for the CA program.

Kara is currently a mentor in the Chartered Accountant Training program helping students as they progress through the modules of the CA program and prepare to write their exams. Kara earned her CA designation in 2007 and her career at Sobeys started the same year. Her role with the company was Manager of Accounting Standards and Policies. She then moved on to become Manager of Sobeys’ implementation of the International Financial Reporting Standards responsible for managing the transition to IFRS for Sobeys. Key aspects of this role include facilitating training sessions, managing project leads across the country, providing recommendations to Steering Committees, and making sure the project team stays on track in terms of deadlines and key deliverables.
